Simplicity in the riffles
The Medalist, time tested, time honored. In the tradition of the early Hardys a reel with out frills. The item in the picture is one of the older types. The newer models are equiped with line shields which also helps to bolster that portion of the rim. There are two modernized lines the 1400 series and the 1500. The 1400s start at up to 5wt in a 4.2 oz. to a hefty 11wt weighing in at 7.6 oz. The smaller lighter reels are line holders and like the rods they were meant for, must be treated with respect. The thin stamping of the outer rim and the handle side of the spool are easily bent. The 1500 series on the other hand has over come that problem with a cast palming ring spool that protects the rim. Another difference between the two series are the 1500 has a wider spool, comes in an up to 7wt to 12wt with backing and weighs from 6.2 to 9.8 oz, also the 1500s are all listed as RC meaning rim control and fish can be fought from the reel whereas the majority of the 1400s' are meant to be used with the retrieved line trailing astream. The mechanical drag on these reels is meant to be set before the fight rather than during and consist of an adjustable formica hand in contact with a graphite wheel and is very precise. A unique feature of Flueger reels i the ability of balancing to the rod by addition of BB shot or lead sinkers to the spool. These reels do thier intended duties and with proper care will and have outlived thier owners. Before buying be sure to check the specs, the 1492 to 1494 are rated without backing as is the 1594rc.
