Not the old Martin reel but still good
Not the old Martin reels I used as a kid, but the new reeels do OK. My father and I bait fish for trout using mono on the Martin. They hold up reasonably well in the wet and even take a dunking on occaision. I just wish they were made in the USA. I'll buy another Martin before it's all over...

Martin 8E Automatic Fly Reel
After purchasing the Martin 8E Automatic Fly Reel and fishiing with it ONLY TWICE, the reel came apart (more like EXPPLOADED)with the spring and rachet flying out all over the boat. Martin's reputation was obviously NOT BUILT on these Chinese Made pieces of JUNK !

Martin Automatic reels
Have been using Martin Automatic (model 8) reals for years, not for fly fishing, but for live bait bass fishing, Crappie, and for throwline fishing for bream etc, with 20lb test line. Love the reals, but would like a booklet on repairing same.

Martin Automatic Fly Reel
I am glad to be able to buy a Martin. I just wish they were still made with American quality in New York State. I was born fly fishing with my loving departed father in the San Juans of Colorado. He always used Martins exclusively, and any problems (few they were) were immediately repaired/replaced free by Martin. Now I am the father/grandfather fishing in Western Montana and still have two of my Dad's old Martins. The new ones are OK, but don't seem to hold the same quality and reputation of the old ones. I have never understood why most modern fly fishermen shun the automatics. I guess they just don't know how well automatics work for catching fish and saving time. Fly fishermen try an automatic. You'll love it.

Model 8 did OK!
I recently bought a new model 8 automatic reel and gave it a pretty hard workout doing both river & stream fishing in CO. Being a seasoned manual reel fly fisherman, I had reservations going in, but was pleased with the Model 8's performance. I did have one problem that required minor disassembly, but I was able to accomplish it mid-river and then go right on fishing. The Model 8 was a fun change from my old manual reel.
